This fully revised edition of Kafka specialist Hartmut Binder’s stroll through Prague remains as useful as it is entertaining. It includes places familiar to Kafka, the places he lived and worked, and provides the opportunity to quote extensively from his writings. Other Prague authors and literary figures – German and Czech alike – also manage to get a word in: these include Max Brod, Franz Werfel, the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, Jan Neruda, the ‘roving reporter’ Egon Erwin Kisch and Jaroslav Hašek, creator of The Good Soldier Švejk, to name only the most famous. Contemporary authors such as Ota Filip, Pavel Kohout and Milan Kundera are also featured. There can be few more detailed or pleasant ways to get to know such a multi-facetted city.
